Albert Hermalin Scholars Fund
“Encouraging Continued Research and Training of PSC Graduates”
During his long and distinguished career, Al Hermalin devoted himself to training and collaborating with demographers from all over the world. His own work expanded the boundaries of population studies.
This Fund, named in his honor, promotes continuing education, international collaboration, and interdisciplinary research and training through the use of short-term postdoctoral fellowships and opportunities for collaborative research visits.
Examples of this funding include summer fellowships to participate in the ISR programs in survey research, six-month fellowships for collaborative research with PSC/ISR researchers, and short-term residencies for cross-disciplinary research in such fields as epidemiology, environmental science, and genetics.
The need for continuing education is especially great for alumni in developing countries. These scholars are often asked to provide guidance on important population issues in situations where few trained demographers are available to share the work. For this reason, these alumni are given preference in funding decisions.
