Research Interests:
Dr. Kusunoki’s interdisciplinary research program centers on women’s health, with a particular focus on the role of women’s intimate relationships and the mechanisms by which these relationships influence women’s reproductive and mental health. Her research is informed by the socioecological model and the life course perspective by centering women and their intimate relationships within the larger social, race/ethnic, and economic context and emphasizing the dynamic nature of intimate relationships – the characteristics and behaviors of which change across time. Most recently, the evidence from her research on intimate partner violence and reproductive coercion (RC) led to the design and evaluation of a trauma-informed, patient-centered digital intervention to address reproductive coercion. The BRIDGES (Building Reproductive Decision-Making, Empowerment and Support) application (app) aims to improve family planning patients’ understanding of RC and harm-reduction strategies, as well as their ability to discuss RC-related issues with healthcare providers if they so choose.
