The Changing Safety Net: Low Income Families’ Economic Survival Strategies During a Recession
Kristin Seefeldt

This work focuses on the economic survival strategies families employ in the post-welfare reform era. We analyze data from detailed, in-depth interviews with low-income families residing in the greater Detroit area, looking at how these families have coped with layoffs, unemployment, or loss of job benefits, and what gaps in public assistance programs might exist.
