In this funded study, I aim to examine the data quality of recent decennial census and its subnational variation across post-Mao China through a rigorous investigation on the data irregularity present in the published population data. Through this examination, I hope to shed new lights on the data trustability issue of official population statistics in contemporary China, and provide insights on how effective the Chinese state is able to extract accurate information from its citizens. Findings of the study will have profound implications on our understanding of Chinese politics, economy, and population dynamics.

The PSC Small Grant award will support my international travel to and back from China in Fall 2023. During the trip I will conduct interviews and archival studies that is key to the successful implementation of this project.
