Changing demographic and economic conditions in South Africa due to the AIDS pandemic require that attention be given to some of the intergenerational equity features of government policy. While there have been studies examining these targeted income transfers in response to economic risks and household vulnerability, few have examined how these measures modify or regulate social behavior, particularly the intergenerational linkages in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The proposed research seeks to better understand the relationship between intergenerational transfers of wealth and a youth’s decision-making around sexual-risk behavior. Analyzing data from the Cape Area Panel Study (CAPS), this study will explore the impact of the South African Old Age Pension on reducing youth sexual risk behavior.
