Recipients of PSC Small Grant Awards

My dissertation research focuses on the relationship between apartheid government provision of family planning and the fertility transition in South Africa. I find that increased availability of contraception contributed to a roughly 17 percent decline in fertility among black South Africans. I submit this proposal to visit a government archive in South Africa and locate a 1981 census of family planning providers. This census contains the most thorough documentation of the geographic variation in provision of family planning and will allow me to more accurately estimate the relationship between fertility and family planning during the apartheid era. I also plan to present my research at several institutions and universities in South Africa.
