Recipients of PSC Small Grant Awards

Scholars do not fully understand how it is that people decide to procreate–or if there even always is an explicit decision. My research seeks to add to this understanding by exploring unplanned conceptions. Specifically, I study three shocks that might lead to changes in the conception rate. They are snowfall, power outages, and movie dates. Event-specific studies suggest that power outages and snowfall do increase conceptions. My aggregate preliminary results show that 10 inches or more of snow fall increases conceptions on a given day by 1%.
