Contribution of Obesity to International Differences in Life Expectancy
Neil Mehta
The primary objective of this research is to identify the contribution of obesity to international differences in longevity with a focus on differences between the United States and European countries. Building on prior work, we will identify the appropriate sets of obesity mortality risks to be used for populations with differing histories of obesity and smoking behaviors because both affect the relationship between current obesity and mortality. Using these improved sets of mortality risks, this work will identify the proportion of deaths that are attributable to obesity and convert attributable risk estimates into their implications for age-specific death rates and life expectancy.
