Economic migration – leaving home for work – has grown to the degree that global remittances are now worth more than twice as much as foreign aid, and many households and entire countries depend on them. In addition to helping develop local economies and increasing household resources, Dean Yang says remittances benefit children in particular, who are able to quit jobs and return to school.
