In 2014, migrants sent $436 billion in remittances to the developing world – or more than three times the amount of development aid sent by the world’s wealthiest nations in the same year. Dean Yang says migrants often view this money as important to the long-term prospects of their family, while recipients tend to be more interested in immediate consumption. He suggests that migrants and recipients work together for the wisest use of funds.
