Xie, Zhang, and Lai find China’s contributions to science and technology surpass those of other nations

China’s vastly expanded college system and growing economy have fueled a science and technology juggernaut for the nation. The U.S. has played a role in this growth as well, given that the number of Chinese students enrolled in U.S. S&T programs has tripled since 1987. Yu Xie, Chunni Zhang, and Qing Lai examine these recent changes. They conclude, in part, that despite increases in both the quantity and quality of scientific research, “China’s rise in science also faces serious difficulties, partly attributable to its rigid, top-down administrative system, with allegations of scientific misconduct trending upward.”
