Xie says internet censorship in China often reflects local officials’ concerns

In a recent study, researchers from Harvard examined existing and their own social media posts in China, identifying which types were most likely to be censored by government officials, and how fast. Commenting on who might be leading internet censorship efforts in China, Yu Xie says that local officials are often the most concerned about it because they have a “personal interest in suppressing content that could lead to social movements” in their areas of purview.
