Xie says high Asian immigration rates reflect demand for technical skills in U.S. job market

A new Pew report says Asians now make up the largest share of U.S. immigrants. Yu Xie says this reflects “fundamental changes” in the US economy away from manufacturing and toward science and engineering. “Native-born Americans do not do well in acquiring technical skills to field the jobs that are demanded by the US economy. So some of that demand is met by foreign students and immigrant scientists,” Xie says.
