Willis finds handing over family finances to husbands weak in numeracy skills is costly

Robert Willis, along with James Smith and John McArdle, analyzed the effects of numeracy skills on family financial status. After testing couples over age 50 on their ability to reason using numbers, they compared the results to the couple’s total accumulated wealth. They found giving a lower skilled husband control had significant negative consequences.
