Weir’s 2009 report on NFL brain injuries got more attention than neurological findings published in 2005

The *WSJ* reports that although Dr. Bennet Omalu initially discovered neurodegenerative damage (CTE) in an autopsy of a former NFL player’s brain in 2002, and published his results in 2005, it took findings from an ISR survey of former NFL players on their mental health to make national headlines and kick off Congressional hearings on CTE.
