Michelle Moniz, a U-M OB/GYN doctor and assistant professor, says recent changes in Medicaid’s billing procedures for long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) – such as hormonal implants and IUDs – will increase access to the most effective forms of birth control for poor women. Given the higher-than-average rates of unintended pregnancy among poor women and the steep costs for LARCs, this change has promise to increase the options for family planning among vulnerable women.
