Thompson says mass incarceration causes collapse of Detroit neighborhoods

A new report from the Annie E Casey Foundation says that 10% of Michigan children have had a parent in prison at some point in their lives. This level of incarceration has had devastating effects on children, families, and communities in Michigan. Heather Ann Thompson says that the War on Drugs and Crime, in particular, has led to mass incarceration in Detroit. She says: “By removing record numbers of people from their neighborhoods for record periods of time, mass incarceration causes neighborhoods in the Motor City to literally collapse.”
