Thompson details killings and shaping of official narrative in 1971 Attica prison uprising
Attica was America’s bloodiest prison rebellion, with dozens of inmates and hostages killed in the violence. Scheduled for release later this month, Heather Ann Thompson’s new account, [*Blood in the Water*](https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Water-Attica-Prison-Uprising/dp/0375423222), pulls from archives and court documents, some never before made public. In her book, she names 14 troopers and 6 correction officers identified by investigators as shooters and discusses then-New York governor Nelson Rockefeller’s efforts to create an acceptable official narrative of the outcome. “This is hugely controversial even today,” Thompson said. “There’s no statute of limitations on murder. And there’s no statute of limitations on the possibility of filing civil rights cases.”
