Thompson casts doubt on the rehabilitative intentions of prison labor

Prison labor is legally required in the US. At the federal and state levels, many inmates work for about a dollar per hour providing cheap, captive labor for private companies. Despite claims about the inmate benefits of such labor – including the development of marketable skills – Heather Ann Thompson says: “The vast majority of prison labour is not even cloaked in the idea of rehabilitation.”
