Stern comments on difficulty of legislatively shutting down online hate forums

Recent mass shootings in San Diego and Christchurch were linked by the perpetrators’ online presence in the 8chan forum. A Vox article explores in more depth the vitriolic nature of this online group. PSC Associate and Professor of History, Alexandra Minna Stern, considers issues of free-speech, and that platforms are not held responsible for for third-party content posted therein. She says that “Trying to legislate 8chan offline would be a dangerous path to go down and probably untenable in the United States.”
