Stephens and Charles say employment has negative association with voter turnout

Melvin Stephens, Jr. and Kerwin Kofe Charles examined how local wages and employment were linked with voter turnout. They found a negative association for non-presidential contests: better local labor market conditions yielded lower turnouts. They posit that higher employment leads to lower voter knowledge for all but presidential elections, which in turn decreases voting in these other elections.
