Smock says domestic inequality maintained by view that male partners ‘help out’ around the house

Citing a number of recent studies on division of household and family duties, this piece contends that women still plan, execute, and follow up with a much greater proportion of domestic tasks than their male partners. And it’s a system of inequality maintained, to some degree, by women themselves. Pamela Smock says that women often describe men’s role as ‘helping out’ out with family and household duties. “As long as the phrase ‘he helped’ is used,” says Smock, “we know we have not attained gender equality.”
