Shaefer directs inter-organization, inter-disciplinary initiative on poverty ‘connected to the real world’

October 07, 2016

With 1 in every 8 Americans living in poverty, U-M wants to “take poverty research to the next level,” says H. Luke Shaefer, director of a new interdisciplinary initiative ‘Poverty Solutions at the University of Michigan.’ The initiative, which will work with Detroit-area community organizations, intends to use research, teaching, and practice to boost economic opportunity, expand educational opportunity, and improve health. Shaefer says: “Engagement will be a guiding principle of what we do here. Our research will be connected to the real world …[and] we will bring our research to policymakers and communities.” The initiative, along with Detroit URC, has issued a call for proposals to prevent and alleviate poverty in Michigan.
