In this Op Ed piece, Kristin Seefeldt, Sarah Burgard, and Sheldon Danziger say the “poor throughout the country are being ignored by both political parties” in this election year. They assert that public investments in education, jobs, and infrastructure, rather than cuts in safety net programs, are what will help save Detroit and other urban areas of concentrated poverty. Their suggestions for Detroit include better quality schools and adult education to improve job prospects for Detroiters and to increase the city’s attractiveness to employers, as well as subsidized employment to help the currently out of work.
