Schulenberg says MTF data show 39% of college students used marijuana in past year

September 11, 2017

According to survey data from the Monitoring the Future study, as the percent of college students who view marijuana use as risky has declined, the percent reporting its use has increased. Currently, 39% of full-time college students report marijuana use in the prior year – a percentage that has increased over the past decade. MTF PI John Schulenberg says: “Going off to college, being away from parents, being off on their own, having more flexibility in their daily schedule — that combination, in addition to being with other friends in the same boat, is why we think we see this uptick in marijuana use, as well as alcohol use, during this transition into college.”
