Online public registries of ex-felons may make the public feel safer, but do they deter crime? JJ Prescott says that one down side of public registries is that they reduce the threat of returning to prison for those on the list. “They have the effect of destroying the value of being out of prison by turning people into pariahs. Prison as a threat only works if you have something to lose,” Prescott says.
