Pfeffer charts family wealth’s impact on social advantage over multiple generations in Sweden

September 27, 2017

Fabian Pfeffer and Martin Hällsten analyze the role of family wealth in educational achievement over two generations in Sweden. After controlling for socioeconomic characteristics, they establish an independent impact of wealth on achievement – even in a comparatively egalitarian context like Sweden. They say: “Our findings indicate that family wealth inequality has profound consequences for the distribution of opportunity across multiple generations,” and speculate that in less egalitarian nations, such as the US, the consequences of wealth inequality will be more profound.
