NSF reports on changes in PhDs awarded and PhD job market, 2004-2014

Although the total number of PhDs awarded in the US has grown by 28% from 2004 to 2014, the proportion of PhD recipients with jobs or commitments has fallen in the same period from 70% to 61%, says the latest report from NSF. This piece looks at the number of PhD recipients, the percent of recipients with jobs or post-doc commitments, and the cumulative debt of new recipients by 6 fields of study over the 10-year period, and comments on changes in PhD receipt by sex and race.
