Janet Currie, PSC faculty associate Michael Mueller-Smith, and Maya Rossin-Slater examined the impact of domestic abuse on pregnancy and birth outcomes, focusing on mothers in New York City who lived in homes where an assault was reported during their pregnancies or shortly after they gave birth. They found several adverse health outcomes for babies born to mothers assaulted during pregnancy and estimated the economic impact of these health outcomes. The researchers say their findings “suggest that in utero subjection to violent crime is an important new channel for intergenerational transmission of inequality.”
