Mitchell finds children who lose fathers suffer at cellular level

In a recent study, Colter Mitchell and colleagues found that losing a father during childhood has a negative impact on cellular function as estimated by the length of their telomeres. At 9 years of age, children with father loss were found to have significantly shorter telomeres (14% reduction). Paternal death has the largest association (16%), followed by incarceration (10%), and separation and/or divorce (6%).
