Miller, Thompson and Morenoff find environmental and social barriers to successful prisoner reentry

December 17, 2015

This news story features research by Reuben Miller, Heather Ann Thompson, and Jeffrey Morenoff on the challenges of prisoner reentry. Miller says his work on the Detroit Reentry Project, which follows former male prisoners, reveals how few resources these men have to improve their lives. They are “locked out of the housing market and locked out of the labor market because of their criminal record.” Thompson says the neighborhoods to which prisoners in Detroit return are often decimated by mass incarceration and have little to offer returnees. Morenoff cites residential instability as a key threshold to successful reentry.
