Langa says seniors taking multiple medications may experience side effects that mimic MCI

January 05, 2015

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) impacts up to 20% of Americans over the age of 65. Although not debilitating, it is noticeable by sufferers and puts them at higher risk for late life dementia. In a recent JAMA article, Kenneth Langa and Deborah Levine look at the diagnosis and management of MCI. One problem in diagnosis can be multiple medications. Langa says: “It is quite common for older adults to be on up to 10 medications, which increases the risk for side-effects and interactions,” including thinking and memory problems.
