Langa et al. find having a stroke ages a person’s brain function by almost 8 years

In a recent study of 4,900 Americans over the age of 65, Kenneth Langa and colleagues found that having a stroke robbed these respondents of about 8 years of memory and thinking speed. The size of the effects was the same among blacks and whites. The authors note the importance of stroke prevention to reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
