Johnston says effectiveness of anti-drug ad campaigns undermined by lack of funding

Since the late 1980s, TV air time for anti-drug ads has steadily declined. Part of the problem has been funding cutbacks, another part the apparent lack of ad effectiveness. Lloyd Johnston and colleagues, however, say teens report that anti-drug ads make them less likely to use drugs. If ads are done right, says Johnston, they can work. “The problem is, there is not enough funding.”
