This interview follows up on a recent incident in India in which 60 of 80 women who had tubal ligations in a government-sponsored sterilization camp became seriously ill — with more than a dozen dying thereafter of septic shock. PSC postdoc Apoorva Jadhav discusses the controversy of sterilization in India as a means of population control. She says coercive sterilization has its roots in the eugenics movement, even while tubal ligations are used as an effective form of birth control the world over.
