Trump’s election seems to have resulted in an unprecedented polarization in consumer confidence about future economic performance. “When we ask them about the economy … most Democrats expect a recession over the next year, and most Republicans expect economic growth,” says Richard Curtin, director of Surveys of Consumers. And that shift occurred “almost totally and instantly with the election of Trump.”
