Ronald Inglehart suggests that Europe’s robust welfare states, ushered in by social democracy, have provided citizens with economic security, freeing them to worry less about material interests and more about demographic and ideational shifts in their neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces. In turn, these nonmaterial concerns – often centered on race, religion, gender identity, and nationalism – became key in casting their votes for right-wing candidates.
