Data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics show median family income rose 2.9% in 2014, while it rose twice that much (5.8%) for households in the 95th percentile of income. PSID Director David Johnson says the longitudinal nature of PSID data can also gauge how long high earners remain near the top of the distribution, and whether wealth is passed down through generations.
