In June 2018, the Census Bureau reported that the white population of the US declined for the first time – a decline that William Frey says will continue for much of this century. The loss of white population is now occurring most heavily among the young population, with racial minorities, especially Latinos, accounting for all the growth in the US population under age 25. In this opinion piece, Frey says that this infusion of youthful minorities is a windfall that could save the US from the kinds of labor force losses that Japan and several European countries are now experiencing, and the resultant declines in contributions to social support for the aging population. But, he warns, “this demographic windfall will not bear fruit unless we make educational and other investments in today’s multicultural youths.”
