Farley’s study of Detroiters’ views on neighborhood racial composition illustrates ambiguity of term ‘diversity’

In this *NYT Magazine* essay, the author cites Reynolds Farley’s survey work researching Detroiters’ attitudes about their ideal level of black-white neighborhood integration (1976-2004). Most black Detroiters considered ‘‘integrated’’ to be a 50/50 mix of white and black, while a majority of whites considered such a ratio much too high for their comfort each time the study was conducted.
