University of Michigan authors and researchers David Featherman, Maris Vinovskis and Sheldon Danziger discuss the often uneasy relationship between social science and public policy-making at the federal and state levels as exemplified by the welfare and education reform movements now underway and current approaches to the problem of poverty in the United States.Featherman, a professor of psychology and of sociology and director of the U-M Institute for Social Research (ISR), and Vinovskis, a professor of history, ISR research scientist and faculty member at the U-M School of Public Policy, will be signing copies of their most recent book, Social Science and Policy-Making: A Search for Relevance in the Twentieth Century, published by the University of Michigan Press.Danziger, a contributor to that book, is a U-M professor of social work and public policy and directs the U-M Social Work Research Center on Poverty, Risk and Mental Health.
