Buchmueller says must-access program curbs doctor-shopping for opioids

Thomas Buchmueller finds that states requiring under certain circumstances that doctors check Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) for patients’ opioid use history experience a significantly reduction in both excessive prescribing among doctors and doctor-shopping behavior among Medicare enrollees. Buchmueller says the PDMPs “make the physicians aware that there are patients showing up for drug-seeking reasons.”
