Although the U.S. economy is growing and adding jobs, the labor force — comprised of both those who have jobs and those looking for work — is getting smaller. Economists think some of the missing workers have given up looking for jobs. John Bound posits that the long-term decline in men’s labor force participation is tied to decreasing demand for low-skill jobs, especially in manufacturing.
