Barber says parents give less to their unintended children

September 21, 2012

In this piece on women who don’t like being mothers, Jennifer Barber discusses her findings on unintended children. She found that about 30% of the children in her study were the result of unintended pregnancies — either mistimed or unwanted. These children got less from their parents in terms of positive attention, warmth, and time. Barber points out that this pattern may be due to parenting stress that’s “directed explicitly toward an unwanted child.”
