Bailey says War on Poverty programs are investments in nation’s future

In this response to the question of whether the U.S. needs another War on Poverty, Martha Bailey contends that the programs initiated by the original War increased opportunities for all Americans and that we should continue that legacy in combatting today’s significant poverty: “Critics are right that many programs are expensive. But calling expenditures ‘costs’ ignores that they are investments in the future. Many early childhood programs more than pay for themselves.”
