Bailey says War on Poverty helped the poor on several fronts

In this interview, Martha Bailey describes the scope and lasting effects of Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. First, she says, it promoted equality by funding only those organizations that complied with federal civil rights laws. Further, “the War on Poverty was much broader than safety net programs,” she says. It also provided programs in education and health designed to build capacity among the poor.
