Jerald Bachman reports on recent findings that, although they are less likely than white high school students to work part-time, African American and Hispanic high school students who do hold jobs tend to work longer hours and suffer fewer negative consequences than whites. “Working more than 15 hours a week is associated with problems for most students,” says Bachman. “These include lower grades and higher use of cigarettes, alcohol, and illicit drugs. But this pattern does not hold true among some minority students, especially those from less advantaged backgrounds.”
