Online ways for older adults to stay socially connected: Lessons from Singapore

Abstract: Online social interactions—through mobile applications, online forums, video calls, and social media—have proliferated. Early adopters of these tools tended to be young, but upcoming birth cohorts of older adults are increasingly likely to use them to stay socially connected. Yet we know little about how older adults integrate their online social participation with in-person (or offline) social participation, as well as its consequences for well-being. Survey research has also evolved, with more older adults taking part in online surveys as response rates for in-person surveys fall. How can online social participation shape older adult well-being, and can we leverage their online presence to conduct research? In this talk, I will share some insights from an ongoing survey project which employs three different modes of survey sampling (in-person; commercial panel; respondent-driven) to assess how older adults aged 50-75 stay connected in Singapore, where the use of digital technology is widespread.

Bio: Shannon Ang is currently Assistant Professor of Sociology and Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Social Inequality at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He relies primarily on survey methods to pursue research interests located at the intersection of social connectedness and societal change. Findings from these studies have been published in Social Science and Medicine, Demography, and the Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological and Social Sciences, amongst others.
