Geronimus says people exposed to discrimination are “endlessly seeing tigers”

Arline Geronimus says the chronic stress associated with regular exposure to injustice, inequality, and discrimination causes cellular aging that makes victims “more susceptible to all kinds of health problems, and less able to fight them.” Being confronted by life-threatening stressors, like seeing a tiger in the bushes, activates a physiological stress response that promotes action. But people who experience discrimination are “endlessly seeing tigers,” she says.
