In a recent Pew survey, a majority of respondents say that America’s growing income gap is bad for the country and that the rich don’t pay their fair share in taxes. These beliefs are attributed in part to the economic times that have seen poverty growing, the middle class shrinking, and wealth more concentrated at the top. Sheldon Danziger points out that “the Great Recession was not an equal opportunity disemployer. College graduates, whites and middle-aged workers had fewer and shorter layoffs than high school graduates, blacks, Hispanics and younger workers. And, only a small percentage of the rich work in the hardest-hit industries, like construction and manufacturing.”
